Gail Katz-James

Gail Katz-James is a Minneapolis artist who transforms steel, wire and recycled objects into playful, vividly colored sculptures that provoke curiosity and often include interactive elements. Previous commissions include interactive sculpture for Children’s Hospitals of Minnesota in Minneapolis and St. Paul. Gail enjoys teaching textiles and printmaking to students of all ages. Gail has been showing outdoor sculptures in regional sculpture walks since 2017. She is exhibiting two sculptures in the Quad Cities Sculpture Walk 2023/24 in Bettendorf, Iowa and Moline, Illinois and one in Rock Falls, Illinois 2023/24. In 2022, she created Waterfall Column for a show at the MSP Airport through Fall 2023. Gail installed Flour Sack Rack, a permanent sculptural bike rack including enamel on steel, for the City of Minneapolis and An Owl’s Perspective, an outdoor interactive sculpture made of willow, steel and hardware for the City of Bloomington in 2018 and 2019. She received an Artist Initiative Grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, for fiscal year 2016. Gail is fabricating a public sculpture for the City of St. Paul, Flock of Houses, for installation in 2024.

Treasure Tower - 2024

This is one in my series of conical towers which explore the intersection between natural structures (trees, rocks, plants) and human built architecture. Visitors are invited to open the small doors and touch the items inside. Enjoy it on many levels - as an abstract linear sculpture which casts curious shadows at different times of day, as a celebration of light and color, and as an invitation to play.
